VECTORIZING ARTWORK MASTER CLASS

You love designing with pen or paint to paper, but struggle understanding how to make the digitally rendered versions of your artwork still feel & look handmade.
You’re sick of missing out on clients who want gold foil or letterpress designs, just because you don’t know how to vectorize your calligraphy or artwork.
You’ve tried vectorizing your designs before. You open up Illustrator - but then get faced with all the choices: do I use the pen tool, or image trace? Do I use an image trace preset? How do I tweak the settings to get my artwork to look realistic, not “too digital”?!? So. Frustrating.
girl. i get it. and i’ve got you!
YOU + ME + 1 HOUR WALKING YOU THROUGH MY EXACT FORMULA FOR PREPPING MY ARTWORK ON PAPER, TO THE EXACT IMAGE TRACE FORMULA I’VE CUSTOM CREATED FOR MY ARTWORK - AND HOW YOU CAN CREATE ONE TO PERFECTLY REPRESENT YOURS!

IT’S TIME TO VECTORIZE
WITH CONFIDENCE IN
YOUR OWN UNIQUE STYLE!
NO MORE STRESSING OUT ALLOWED!
Sit down with me (virtually!) for just 1 hour (totally manageable!), and I’ll show you:
✔️Which tools to use to get a clean design from the start on paper
✔️ How to scan in your artwork
✔️How to create a unique image trace formula perfect for your personal style
✔️How to save that formula so you’re not starting from scratch each time
✔️And how to then take your design and prep it for a printed design so you’re confident & ready to work with those dream clients!
I’ve put 5 years of learning all about creating art by hand and making sure the digital, vectorized versions of that art represent the authentic handmade style into each lesson, and I’m sharing it with you in a casual “pretend-I’m-sitting-next-to-ya-in-your-living-room” video style.
Because friend, this doesn’t need to be
as intimidating as it has been for you so far!
WHAT EXACTLY DOES
VECTORIZING YOUR ARTWORK MEAN?
…and why is it so important for you to learn?
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VECTORIZING ARTWORK
AND DIGITIZING WATERCOLORS?
Vectorizing takes a black and white design, and makes it fully scalable and ready to use for print processes like letterpress, foil, and white ink printing. It’s also perfect for things like brand design, or sending digital files to design clients!
Digitizing watercolors, the way I teach it, covers how to properly scan in your watercolor artwork at the best quality, edit your colors to best match your original painting, seamlessly remove your paper texture background without erasing any of the light colors in your painted design, brighten & refine your design so it pops and has life, and save your designs so that they are ready for both print and web. (Click here to learn more about the Digitizing Watercolors course)
Can you see how these two processes of editing your artwork go hand in hand?
DO I NEED TO VECTORIZE MY WATERCOLORS?
Nope! I never vectorize my watercolors, and you don’t need to either!
Why? Because it truthfully it isn't necessary!
Through the methods I teach you in the Digitizing Watercolors course, you will end up with design files that are high resolution and ready to print on a large scale without losing the quality - no vectorizing needed.
But, I do vectorize black & white traces of my brush calligraphy and watercolor designs.
SO, WHEN & WHY DO I NEED TO VECTORIZE MY ARTWORK?
Anytime you send a design to production for letterpress or foil, the elements that are pressed/stamped need to be vectorized.
If a client needs their design in a black & white fully scalable format for something like a wedding gobo (when a design is projected with light onto a floor/wall), it needs to be vectorized.
If you were to design custom branding for a creative, and wanted to provide them with both the watercolor versions of their designs and the vectorized artwork - in case they have letterpress business cards printed!
Any time you want a solid colored, line art style artwork or clean calligraphy that you can easily change the color of for custom artwork or shop designs, I recommend that you vectorize that artwork/calligraphy.
WHAT WILL I LEARN IN THIS CLASS?
The Vectorizing Artwork master class includes 5 core lessons that guide you through which art supplies are best for vectorizing, how to scan your artwork, how to create your own image trace preset to best fit your artistic style, how to save your designs, and how to prep them for both print & web - so you'll walk away with a beautiful art print and the confidence to work with custom clients or create gorgeous letterpress & foil shop products!

- FAQ -
I'VE GOT ANSWERS!
When will I get access to the course content? All of the core lessons will be available as soon as you sign up!
Do I have lifetime access to the class? Yes, of course! You have lifetime access to this class (and any of the SJM Art School classes you enroll in) - plus you'll get lifetime updates to the classes if I change anything! AKA if Adobe changes something and there's a cool new helpful tool, I'll teach ya about it!
What design programs do I need to enroll in this course? *You will need Adobe CS6 or higher for image trace* We’ll only be using Adobe Illustrator for this class. But, I highly recommend investing in the Adobe Creative Cloud!! I use multiple programs from the Creative Cloud, so investing in the full Creative Cloud is more cost effective than buying each unique program separately. But don't you worry - you get to test them for free! Adobe has a free 30 day trial of their Creative Cloud so you can decide if you do want to get the whole Creative Cloud, or just download the individual programs we'll use. Which of course, I'll detail in much more depth inside the course!
I'm a brush calligrapher but I don't paint florals - or - I'm a watercolor artist but not a brush calligrapher. Will this course be beneficial for my unique niche? Heck yes, friend! I use the same vectorizing process (simply tweaking a few of the image trace settings - which I talk about in class) for vectorizing calligraphy and line art designs like florals, venue illustrations, crests, and more.
Will this course teach me how to vectorize my calligraphy/watercolor? Great question! And nope, it won’t teach you how to vectorize watercolor, because that isn’t necessary! (You can learn more about my Digitizing Watercolors class here to see how I scan & edit my watercolors, though!). This class will teach you how to vectorize the black and white versions of your designs (which can be based on your watercolors - like in the crest example on this page) for things like letterpress and foil.
Do I have to have a business to take this course? Nope, but it's a GREAT way to help you build a business! This course is your perfect next step from taking your original artwork and prepping it for print and web. Since you'll already have the print-ready and web-ready design files, why not make use of them and produce them through the vendors in my Printing & Production Partners Guide?!
How long will it take me to complete the course? The course lessons are just about 1 hour in total, with lessons that are about 5-20 minutes in length. And, you have lifetime access so you can go at your own pace. I recommend watching each lesson as many times as it takes for you to feel comfortable and confident in that new skill, before rushing onto the next lesson!
Do I have to live in the USA to be a student? Nope! We have lots of amazing international students - from Australia, England, Canada, and more! That's the perk of online courses :)
Do you offer any refunds? Yup! If you take the course within 30 days of enrolling, practice each lesson and show me your homework - and I don't see any improvement in your vectorizing skills, I'll give you a full refund! Risk-free choice, my friend!
OH GOSH, I FORGOT MY MANNERS!!
HEY Y'ALL, I'M JESSICA!
AND I'LL BE YOUR TEACHER!
I'm an artist for sweethearts, and an educator for artists. And the best news? I'm a self-taught artist, so I know exactly what you're going through! I help budding artists like you build their creative confidence through comprehensive yet simple step-by-step classes. And I'm all about learning with a cup of coffee in the morning or a glass of wine at night!
Over the past 5 years, I've taught over 500 students through in-person watercolor workshops. I LOVE teaching in-person, but know that not everyone can travel to be in the cities where I host my workshops! Which is why I'm SO excited to bring the SJM Art School online, so you can take the classes from the comfort of your home - whether that's a hop skip and a jump away in another Texas city, or all the way in Australia!
I've built my business on watercolor. But it wasn't always that way. I started my career as an assistant to a (super super sweet!) wedding planner. While my job was visually creative, I craved the opportunity to make more with my hands. With paint. So when my (now hubby, Zack!) popped the question and asked me to move from Nashville to Knoxville, I took the leap to create a full-time business and a life I adore that's fueled by art and love. And I haven't looked back since.
So whether you're craving a job change to something more creative and hands-on, want to enhance your current creative business by adding watercolor to your products or services, or simply need guidance getting started with watercolor, the SJM Art School will provide you with the education, confidence, and community you deserve!
