SJM Brush Calligraphy Workshop at The Bride Room Nashville
Teaching workshops has become such a love of mine! There is hardly a better feeling than being surrounded by a group of eager to learn creatives who are excited to begin a new skill with brush calligraphy. The best moment? When I can tell that something has clicked with each of them, and they begin using their brush with confidence!
My last SJM Brush Calligraphy Workshop was held at the gorgeous bridal boutique, The Bride Room, in Nashville, TN. I absolutely adored being surrounded by their assortment of the most stunning wedding gowns, with designers including Monique Lhullier, Jenny Packham, Leanne Marshall, and more. It brought back memories from when I was trying on some of these same gowns during my bridal appointment with them (more to come on that next week!)
I was so thrilled to have the talented Amy Nicole Photography with us that afternoon to capture detail shots, along with some pictures of me teaching this workshop! Take a look at some of my favorites below.
Doesn't this table look so perfect popping against the lush white gowns? Swoon! Since I knew the setting of this workshop was going to be so romantic, I decided to make all of the design details airy and feminine. Each attendee was welcomed with a personalized place card with their name written in my brush calligraphy atop a soft blush watercolor scroll. These topped their supplies for the afternoon, including their pad of paper, brush calligraphy alphabet guide, tips and tricks pages, tubes of watercolor and gouache, paintbrush, and well palette. Since each attendee takes home their supplies from the workshop, they were also given one of my darling Carry Love With You Always tote bags to carry everything home.
At the beginning of the workshop, we discussed the very basics of brush calligraphy. I shared all about my favorite supplies to use, as well as the tips and tricks I've learned along the way. I then demonstrated how to apply just the right amount of water and paint to your paintbrush, how to hold your paintbrush, and how to orient your pad of paper. Then, the fun began! The attendees started practicing how to make basic brushstrokes and shapes - the foundations of brush calligraphy.
I always love keeping my workshops small - between 5-15 students is the ideal class size. It allows me to have one-on-one time with each student, which I feel is so valuable!
After the students felt comfortable making their basic brushstrokes, we practiced making each letter of the lowercase and uppercase alphabet. They loved being able to watch me make each letter on the big pad displayed on my easel! After they mastered making the letters, we took what they learned and practiced forming words and laying out names in order to beautifully address envelopes! Their friends and family are going to receive the prettiest snail mail this year, guaranteed.
Hands get tired after practicing brush calligraphy! So, I always like to stop halfway through my workshops to treat my students to something sweet! My go to? A macaron and lemonade bar, of course! I had so much fun designing this dessert table, incorporating more airy, feminine details into the design.
My favorite detail was this hand lettered table runner I created. It has the lyrics from a song I heard in concert at The Opry that I went to with the boy. In the moments while listening to that song, the words solidified for me that we would be together for the long haul, even before we told each other we loved each other. It was so sweet writing out this love song on a long scroll of paper. It's something I've kept after this workshop and will cherish forever! The song is "when the right one comes along".
Sweet Darling Patisserie so graciously provided us with the most delectable macarons! Lemon Thyme, Very Berry Tart, and Creme Caramel? Yes, please! I love the gold brushstroke on the Creme Caramel macarons - so fitting for a brush calligraphy workshop! If you're in Nashville, you absolutely must stop by their macaron cart in Hillsboro Village, or visit them at the farmers market. They also ship across the country if you don't live nearby!
Belvoir Fruit Farms was also so sweet to provide us with these darling mini bottles of flavored lemonade! I couldn't decide if their classic Elderflower Lemonade or their Lime & Lemongrass Lemonade was my favorite. Like they claim, both are 100% good! And of course those adorable bottles and their on point branding make them cute as can be for a dessert bar, or to sip at home with friends. I'm going to have to try concocting a fancy cocktail recipe with one of these soon!
My heart is always so happy and full after an afternoon of teaching a brush calligraphy workshop, and it was such fun reliving this day with the photos from Amy Nicole Photography. I cannot wait until my next SJM Brush Calligraphy Workshop in Huntsville Alabama this Saturday, August 22nd - it's going to be so much fun teaching in a new city! Last time I checked, there are still a handful of seats left, and I'd love to have you!! You can read all the details about this workshop and how to register by visiting this link.
Thanks so much to my sweet sponsors and a huge thank you to The Bride Room for hosting this workshop!
