Last month, I had the wonderful opportunity to teach the beautiful art of brush calligraphy to a group of students at the Bella Bridesmaids in Nashville during my SJM Brush Calligraphy Workshop. Bella Bridesmaids was the most beautiful backdrop for this workshop, I was secretly eyeing all the dresses for my own bridesmaids! It was such a fun and relaxing afternoon, and I'm loving reliving the day with these photos from my talented friend Zipporah Photography!
Make sure to keep reading all the way to the bottom of this post for a fun Christmas in July sale!
The ladies were welcomed by the sweetest lemonade and macaron table, and we started the afternoon by getting to know each other and why everyone was interested in taking the workshop. Everyone adored their individual bottles of Belvoir lemonade, how darling is the packaging? Cute packaging always wins me over, but the unique flavor of the Elderflower & Rose Lemonade is what I loved most! Of course we also couldn't keep our hands off of the Sweet Darling Patisserie macarons - the margarita flavor was my favorite!
After mingling for a little white, I invited the students to find their seat at the table. The cutest little mini easels held each of their place cards, which I thought was an adorable artistic detail! At their seats, the students found all of the supplies they needed for the workshop, including an instructional alphabet, a tips & tricks guide to brush calligraphy, a notes page for jotting down ideas, a pad of watercolor paper, a spotter brush, tubes of gouache and watercolor, and a set of envelopes for practicing. They each also received this darling "carry love with you always" tote to carry home all of their supplies from the day!
We started the workshop by going over the basics of brush calligraphy, from which supplies are best to use and how to hold your paintbrush. We then went into how to create different types of brushstrokes, which is when the students started to really get a hang of using their brushes! The strokes we made during this practice time would be carried throughout the workshop.
After the ladies felt comfortable making brushstrokes, I demonstrated how to make each letter of the alphabet, both in lowercase and uppercase. The students all said that reviewing each letter and watching how I made each shape was very useful!
Once everyone had a grasp on how to letter the alphabet, I taught them how to combine letters into words with beautiful composition techniques. Since your name is what you write most frequently, that is what we practiced! The girls were rockstars, and their lettering was beautiful! They were then able to take their lettering skills and practice hand lettering envelopes with full names and addresses. Their friends and family will be receiving the prettiest mail this year!
What I love most about these in-person workshops is the ability to have one-on-one time with each of the students. I have such a huge heart for teaching and watching someone who is so excited to learn start understanding a new art form, so these workshops really set my heart on fire!
With that said, I am SO excited to announce that today only, I'm offering a flash sale for my next SJM Brush Calligraphy Workshop!
