Italy Vacation: Chianti

VacationJessica Peddicord2 Comments

The region of Chianti is incredibly beautiful, with an abundance of rolling hills and greenery. Mom and I decided that it would be the perfect place to take our second day trip from Florence, to experience a part of Italy that neither of us had visited before. Chianti 1

Vineyards have always fascinated me, so when we reached the Castello del Trebbio in Chianti, I was ecstatic! This castle once belonged to the Pazzi family, but was taken by one of the Medici brothers after the Pazzi brothers attempted (and failed) to kill the two Medici brothers. Today, another family resides in the castle. The wife loves olives and olive oil, and dedicates her time to making olive oil, while the other members of the family make some of the finest Chianti I have ever tasted.

The inside of the castle was so rustic and beautiful, and reminded me of the quintessential Tuscan feel.

It was amazing to see the process of the wines being made. There were hundreds upon hundreds of bottles of wine being held on a diagonal in order for them to mature appropriately.Β After taking a tour of the castle, we were able to taste three different types of wines and sample various meats, cheeses, and breads.

Our favorite Chianti was the 2007 Castello del Trebbio Chianti Rufina Lastricato. We brought a bottle home with us, along with some olive oil. Unfortunately, we have not been able to find that exact wine in the United States, butΒ certain Total Wines stores carry the 2006 version of the Chianti from this vineyard. It is slightly more bitter, but it is still delicious.

Once we filled up on wine and cheese,Β we stepped outside to get the best view overlooking Chianti and the vineyard.

And, of course, we had to take a few pictures against the stunning backdrop. If you ever get the chance, I would absolutely suggest visiting Chianti!
