One of the things I love just as much as I love teaching is traveling, and it is such a great joy when I get to combine the two! This summer I had the opportunity to travel to Huntsville, Alabama to teach one of my SJM Brush Calligraphy Workshops to the creative community in that small town, and it was so rewarding!
Miss Jacki of Salt & Paperie started Encourage Huntsville to encourage her community to be more creative, as it is a very engineering focused town. I love the heart behind what she is doing, and was so thrilled to be a small part of her movement! Jacki also took all of these lovely pictures below!
How beautiful is Belle Faire? I couldn't ask for a better setting for my workshop - it reminded me of a little slice of Kate Spade in studio form!
The very first things I go over with all of my students are the basics of brush calligraphy. Everything from how to hold your paintbrush to how much paint to apply, and how to make upstrokes and downstrokes. These foundations are essential to feel comfortable with before diving into anything else!
After everyone feels comfortable using their paintbrush and making marks, we move onto lettering the entire alphabet, including uppercase and lowercase letters! I love this part of the workshops, because it is when my students start to really feel comfortable and begin to have fun! Using brush calligraphy to go through the alphabet can be such a therapeutic, relaxing thing to do, which is why it was perfect for a Saturday afternoon activity!
In order to ensure my students are getting the most of their experience, and really learning how to make each stroke, I practice each letter with them up at the front of the class, and also walk around the room and have one-on-one time with each of them. I find this the most valuable part of the workshop experience!
Once we've finished the alphabet, we take the lessons they've learned to connect letters to form words and make phrases. I loved this class project - I had everyone make a calligraphy art print with their favorite quote! It was fun to see the different quotes each student chose to letter! Mean Girls was a popular theme for quotes, as we were using my signature hot pink paint!
And of course, no SJM Workshop would be complete without a dessert table! These GiGi's Cupcakes were so delicious, and paired so perfectly with my favorite Lime & Lemongrass lemonade from workshop sponsor Belvoir Fruit Farms!
I'm so excited to announce that I have two more workshops added to the calendar! I'll be teaching at the Cultivate Retreat in Tampa, Florida November 9-10, as well as at The School of Styling in Nashville, Tennessee March 8-10! I'm also hoping to announce some local workshops in Knoxville this fall! You can find out more details about my brush calligraphy workshops here.
